What are Behavior Tracking Codes?
Behavior Tracking is a system of positive, negative, neutral and tardy behaviors that have been configured to meet a school’s specific needs. Behavior Tracking Codes make up a behavior system. Codes can be used to reward or deduct points, trigger a progressive matrix, or simply track an event.
Reactions, within a Behavior Code's matrix, determine what the code does and how it affects students and staff.
Heads Up! A Reaction needs to be created BEFORE creating a Behavior Tracking Code. This is because a default Reaction needs to be selected from the dropdown in order to save when creating a Behavior Tracking Code. Go to: Creating & Managing Reactions Article |
Creating Behavior Tracking Codes
STEP 1: Behavior Tracking Codes are created via Config > Behavior Codes.
STEP 2: Click the green "Create Behavior Code" button in the upper right-hand corner. Here, you will enter basic information about the Behavior Code including:
- Code (short name): The short name of the behavior code is limited to 50 characters. We recommend keeping this shorter than 10 letters.
- Description: Provide a longer description of the behavior code here.
- Message on Pass: The message that should be printed on the pass (if printing will be enabled).
- External Reference Code: If your code should write back to your SIS, the external reference code needs to match the code in your SIS.
- Type: Positive, Negative, Neutral or Tardy
Types of Behavior Tracking Codes:
- Positive: A positive code is configured to reward students with points for positive behaviors. Some examples include: Participation, On-Task, Helped a Classmate.
- Negative: A negative code often has a behavior matrix setup that triggers Reactions, Interventions, and/or Notifications after a set number of recurrences. It can also be configured to deduct points from a student's total. Some examples include: Off-task or Disrespectful.
- Neutral: Neutral codes do not impact student point totals. These codes have a variety of uses but may be utilized for tracking something like a student needing a math or reading intervention, to indicate if the student’s bus was late, or for early checkout.
- Tardy: A tardy code is used for tracking tardiness, including tardy to school or class. Often, tardy codes are also configured with a behavior matrix set up to trigger reactions, interventions, and/or notifications after a set number of recurrences.
Below this, you have three options:
- Active: Is this Behavior Tracking Code ready to be used? If not, toggle OFF "Active" to hide the code from any users. When the code is ready to be visible, toggle ON "Active."
- Print Pass: Should this code print a pass when it is logged?
- Fast Track: Will this code be bulk-tracked? For example, is this a behavior like "Good Participation" that might be applied to a group of students? If so, enable "Fast Track."

Adding a Default Reaction to the Behavior Code
On the right side of the page, you will select a Default Reaction to the Behavior Code. As noted above, you need to create a Reaction BEFORE creating a Behavior Tracking Code in order for the Reaction to appear in the dropdown.
After selecting a Reaction, you have several options including:
- Remove or add points: Should this code add or deduct Hero points? If so, enter a positive number to add or a negative number to deduct.
- Repeat action X times when the rule is met: This will multiply the action by the number selected. For example, if you select 2 for a detention, the student will be given 2 detentions. This should not be changed in most cases.
- Print X copies of each pass: Should this code print multiple passes? If so, increase this number from "1."
Click Save.
Adding multiple Reactions to the Behavior Code
If a Behavior Tracking Code should have multiple Reactions in the Behavior Matrix, you can add additional Reactions by editing the code.
To edit a Behavior Tracking Code, go to Config > Behavior Codes. Click the edit button on the right side of the row for the code you want to edit.
Here, you will see any Reactions that have been attached to this code. To add additional Reactions, click the green "Add" button. To manage existing Reactions, click the blue "Manage Reactions" button.
